The domination of the global chipset market has been attributed to managing supply problems. In terms of managing supply constraints, MediaTek’s Taiwan-based fabless semiconductor company has done better than Qualcomm, which is based in San Diego. And it’s reflected in the second quarter numbers, which were released today.
With a market share of 43%, Qualcomm has had little chance of competing. According to the Counterpoint research firm, MediaTek was helped by less supply restrictions, including RFICs (radio-frequency integrated circuits), power management ICs (PMIC), and consistent production outputs from TSMC.
MediaTek’s success helped it take first place in the semiconductor market for the fourth quarter in a row. Qualcomm, which had 24% share last year, has increased its share to 28% this quarter.
Overall, in Q2 2021, chipset shipments increased 31% year over year. The 5G smartphone sales nearly quadrupled compared to the same period a year ago.
Qualcomm is changing its sourcing strategy.
Qualcomm’s dominance in the 5G baseband market has improved to 55 percent, according to a Counterpoint research report. “It benefited from Apple’s victory with the 5G baseband modem chipset and strong demand for its entire 5G SoC chipsets, ranging from the flagship 8 series to affordable 4 series,” said the study. Qualcomm is shifting its component procurement strategy, which should serve it well throughout the next quarter.
Meanwhile, Apple retained its third place in the smartphone SoC market with a 14% share in Q2. UNISOC has grabbed the fourth spot in the quarter with a 9% market share.
This year, UNISOC has been successful in growing its customer base and securing design deals with major OEMs including Honor, Realme, and Motorola.
